With their Team Iolanthe run fast approaching on April 26th, we asked Mike...

How did you get into running in the first place?

"I’ve run on and off since school. I was part of the cross-country team growing up, and although there have been periods where I’ve stepped away from it, running has always been something I come back to."

Have you run marathons before?

"While this will be my first standalone marathon, I’ve taken part in endurance events before, including completing an Ironman and a 33-mile ultramarathon. Those experiences definitely help when it comes to the mindset needed for long-distance events."

What do you find tough about training/marathon running?

"Getting out the door when the conditions aren’t great can be tough — especially when it’s raining before you start and you know it might rain for the entire run. When you’re balancing training with work and family life, sometimes that small window of time is the only opportunity you have, so you just have to embrace it and get on with it."

What do you find rewarding/enjoyable about training/marathon running?

"Running makes me feel fresh and healthy. It clears my head, gives me energy, and there’s something really satisfying about the routine and discipline that comes with consistent training."

What do you enjoy doing when not running?

"It might sound like a cliché, but outside of work and training I love spending time with my wife and our daughter. Family time is really important to me."

Why do you want to run for Iolanthe?

I’m a father and have a huge appreciation for midwives and the care they provide to families at such an important time. We experienced that support first-hand, and if I can play a small part in helping the work the Iolanthe Midwifery Trust does to support midwives, then I’m very happy to do so.
