Award Received:
Midwives Award
Project:
funding swimming pool hire in order to offer free aquanatal classes to pregnant people in the rural community
Year awarded:
2024

I would like to extend my heartfelt thanks to the Iolathe Midwifery Trust for giving me this funding award to support the cost of swimming pool hire for Aquanatal classes in Oban and the surrounding area.

This generous support makes a real difference to the lives of pregnant women in our rural community, and I am deeply grateful for your trust in me to provide this service with your support.

As a Midwife and Aquanatal teacher, I see first-hand the wide ranging benefits that these classes bring to our expectant mothers. Aquanatal sessions offer a unique combination of exercises, emotional well-being, and the opportunity to socialise with others.

For many women, especially those in our more remote areas, opportunities like this are limited or entirely unavailable, in this case for Aquanatal. The ability to attend a professionally led class by a familiar face, close to home, without worrying about the cost, is incredibly empowering and a service the women are all very thankful for.

The feedback I’ve received from participants has been overwhelmingly positive. Many have shared how much they look forward to the sessions, not only for the physical benefits but for the mental and emotional support.

The classes offer a supportive, inclusive space where pregnant women can relax, bond with their unborn babies, make friends with others at a similar stage in pregnancy, and feel nurtured, all whilst improving their health, wellbeing and fitness.

The removal of financial barriers means that everyone who wants to attend can do so, regardless of their circumstances.

This inclusivity helps to build stronger, more connected communities and relationships, something that is especially vital in rural and island settings where isolation can be a significant issue.

Your funding has made it possible for these sessions to continue to be offered in Oban and the Isle of Mull and thrive in doing so. By covering the cost of pool hire, the Iolathe Midwifery Trust has directly contributed to improving maternal health and well-being in our area. Your commitment to supporting midwives especially in rural areas is both inspiring and deeply appreciated by both my colleagues and our service users.

Thank you once again to the Iolanthe Midwifery Trust for your generous support. The difference you have made is already being felt by the women who attend these classes and their gratitude echoes mine.

I would encourage other midwives and student midwives to consider applying for one the awards in order to improve outcomes for women, birthing people and their families.
