We are extremely grateful to all the previous runners who supported the Iolanthe Midwifery Trust in the London Marathon. The sponsorship money which the runners raised enables the Trust to continue its work to promote and improve the care of mothers, babies and their families.

In 2007 five marathon runners braved the heat and humidity to run the London Marathon for Iolanthe. Together they raised nearly £6,000.
Paul Martin completed the marathon in 3:48:45 and, despite being a little stiff the next day, he enjoyed the experience. He said: "I really enjoyed the experience, it was my first marathon, the crowd were fantastic. Although it was quite warm to run in, at least the weather encouraged the crowds to come out and support us all. I was very pleased to have overtaken Gordon Ramsay, although I didn't realise until I looked at the results, and also to beat a number of sports stars - Sally Gunnell and Matt Dawson."
Jackie Earl completed the marathon in 6:54. She said: "I had the best day of my life and finished in 6 hours 54 minutes - 54 minutes longer than 12 years ago and in that heat!!!!"
Peter Hawes ran the course in 4:29 and also felt the effects of the heat. He said: "Yes, I survived ... just! Though I admit it was the closest I've ever come to pulling out of a race. I was on target to do a sub-4 hour run till about the 18 mile mark. Then the heat really kicked in and I noticed far too many people literally dropping down either side of me. So I slowed right down and made it through in a respectable (though not exactly speedy) 4 hours 29 mins."
Matt Rycroft finished the marathon in 5:19, which was slower that he had hoped for due to the heat. However, he still enjoyed himself: "It was a great day out with brilliant support, however I was beaten by superman, batman and robin as well as the incredible hulk, but managed to muster enough energy to get past Paddington Bear with about 5 miles to go!"

Sarah Ayres completed the course in 5:46. She found the conditions very challenging but the support of her family kept her going. She writes: "I did it!! I have to say that it was the hardest thing I have ever done and the conditions made the course a challenge to say the least. I went a lot slower than I wanted too but I could see so many other runners being treated by the side of the road that I didn't want to be one of them and I really wanted to finish. It was very emotional as my family and friends were cheering me on at the 13 mile point and then at the Palace just a few hundred yards from the finish it was so lovely to see them (I think it may have taken them just as long as me to get to the finish to see me)!! Thank you for the opportunity to run for you and for giving me a great opportunity to say 'I ran the London Marathon'."

Esther Davies ran as part of an experienced team from the Homerton Hospital. Her story appeared in a recent issue of the Hackney Gazette and is reproduced here with kind permission of the author, Sally Scott, and the Homerton University Hospital NHS Foundation Trust.
Esther told Sally: "I'm really excited more than nervous and I've done some long runs so I'm getting more and more confident. I've been running along the River Lee and Hackney Marshes so if anything it's been enjoyable."
Esther has managed to raise over £1500 for the Iolanthe Midwifery Trust.

Kylie does it in just over 4 hours
Congratulations to Kylie Wallace shown here before the race. She emailed us to say that she ran the marathon in just over 4 hours and "loved the experience ... it was fantastic, still on cloud nine, and body feeling good." Kylie, an independent midwife in London, is a
previous Iolanthe award winner. She added: "I'm just so pleased I could raise so much - everyone was so generous it overwhelmed me. Thanks to [the Iolanthe] I could run the marathon and have such a fantastic experience from it"
A personal accomplishment
Congratulations also to Nicole Hopwood. She ran the marathon in 4 hours and 52 minutes. She writes: "It was an absolute pleasure to run for the Trust. I thank you for the opportunity to obtain a place in the London Marathon. I am very pleased to raise money for a worthwhile charity and at the same time feel a sense of personal accomplishment." |
