Congratulations to our 2009 London Marathon runners
It was a warm day as the 35,000 runners took to the street for this year's London Marathon. Iolanthe was supported by a dedicated team of runners, each of them with a keen interest in helping mothers and babies. Provisional times:

Our 2009 runners
In 2009 we had our first ever husband and wife team, Tony and Sukeallia Blount. They live in Northampton, where Tony is a Global Security Analyst and Sukeallia is a full time parent. Tony has been running for 2 years and completed the 2008 BUPA 10K in just over an hour. Sukeallia also completed the 10K - her time was 82 minutes. They ran the London Marathon for Iolanthe because: "We have a few friends that are nurses and midwives, they are committed wholly to their job but have noticed that fewer people are joining the sector after training, we would love to run for such a good cause raising money knowing that a lot of friends are behind us all the way as it would mean so much to them, and your charity and everyone who would directly benefit." Support Tony and Suke
An experienced runner, Claire Parkin has completed a half marathon in 1 hour 55mins and a 10K in 55mins. Claire is a midwife in Swansea. Before the marathon she said that it "has been a lifetime ambition to run the London Marathon before I am thirty and I would love to support the Iolanthe Midwifery charity." Claire ran with three other friends who were raising money for other charities. Support Claire

As a member of her local running club ‘Hogweed Trotters’, Nicola Rushton has been running for 3 ˝ years. She recorded her best half marathon time of 1.57 at the Bristol half marathon and has participated in many other running events - "from 5k to half marathon including muddy off road trail races!" This was Nicola's first full marathon. In preparing for the event she said: "I remember watching the London marathon when I was 7 and wanting to run and this will be fulfilling that life time ambition before I am 30!!"
Nicola told us that: "I decided to add to the challenge and run dressed as a bumble bee! The support yesterday was fantastic and I am delighted to have completed my first marathon in 4.57.42"
Nicola supported the Iolanthe Midwifery Trust because "I believe it is an area that needs constant funds to enhance the well being of mothers, their babies and families by improving the education and professional development of midwives in the UK for future generations."

Pete with son Freddie |
Also braving the heat of the 2009 London Marathon was Pete Thompson, who told us that he was new to running. Pete is an IT consultant from Macclesfield. In preparing for the marathon Pete said: "It's long been a goal to run a marathon and as I'm not getting any younger I thought it was about time. As a keen footballer I've always had a reasonable level of fitness but I'm not underestimating the challenge. So far I've managed a 13 mile run in just under 2 hours so I'm probably halfway there for my target of 4 hours for the marathon!"
Having completed the marathon in just over the 4 hours, Pete emailed us from his iPhone to say that he was recovering well from the exertions and was pretty happy with his time: "The sunny day might not have been great for running fast times but it brought the crowds out and gave the whole thing a really special atmosphere. It's been a wonderful experience. Thanks for your support and the chance to run in such a fantastic event."
Pete chose to run for Iolanthe because "Having just had a baby I know the support we got from midwives was very important." Pete's wife had a few complications with the birth and Pete says "I have to say that the midwives were brilliant at Macc hospital so in the absence of any other burning charitable passion it seemed like a good choice for me to maybe give something back to the profession!"

With 5 years experience Louise Whitehead is an experienced runner who runs 20 miles a week. She has completed the Great North (2:02), Silverstone Half (2:15) and the Great South. Louise is an accountant from Kennington. She ran for Iolanthe because "My mother worked as a midwife for 15 years with the NHS, and my sister is due to start training as one in the coming months. I want to raise money for something that is close to my heart and understand the importance of." |
The photograph shows Louise - she says "I think I look pretty good considering this was taken at mile 23!"
