Introduce a change in your practice

Evidence-based practice is a requirement of modern health care and is assumed to be an integral part of all health professionals’ practice. However, achieving evidence-based practice often requires considerable resource investment both in terms of time and money but also determination on the part of those who seek to challenge and change practice.

The Delivering Best Practice was designed to help maternity professionals ensure that they are providing the best possible care. Clinicians are in the best position to be able to recognise ways in which the care of mothers and their babies could be improved.  You may have ideas of your own or you may have read about innovations in other units, but, perhaps find it difficult to interest your manager or gain the financial support necessary to support the change.  Then this is your chance!  It is, however, important to remember that changes nearly always need multidisciplinary collaboration.  In your application you will, therefore, need to demonstrate the support of other professional groups necessary for the change to succeed and be maintained.

The first recipient of the Delivering Best Practice award was a team based at Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Trust led by Lesley Gilchrist. You can see an abstract of the study: Does changing the second stage of labour guidelines from time limited to progress-led influence the birth outcome and birth experience for women?  by clicking here.
