Attend a conference or travel

Attend a conference, travel to other countries to observe midwifery practice, make a video or prepare other educational material. The Trust welcomes applications which explore new ideas.  For example, in the past we have helped to fund the development of an educational/information package for professionals and parents following a stillbirth. We have also financed the preparation of a video to help prepare parents who are returning home with a new baby who has required intensive or special care.  Midwives have also been funded to attend international conferences, such as the International Confederation of Midwives' Triennial Congress.

This year we funded Iolanda Serci to attend the International Society for the Study of Fatty Acids and Lipids (ISSFAL) and present a paper. She said:

My doctorate study is a human trial examining associations with FA dietary intake and blood status, and maternal outcomes in pregnancy and post-partum. Much of the research presented [at the conference] has direct relevance to my research. I would like to take the opportunity to thank the Iolanthe Midwifery Trust for the generous funding to attend the conference which has allowed me to enhance my knowledge and understanding, and networks, in the area of polyunsaturated fatty acids and maternal health, and to enhance the profile of the midwifery profession.

In 2005 Anne-Marie Rennie was awarded an educational bursary to attend the ICM congress in Brisbane. She tells us why her award was so important to her:

I was absolutely delighted to have been successful in my application for the Iolanthe education bursary. It enabled me to attend the International Confederation of Midwives 27th Triennial Congress, Midwifery: Diverse Pathways to Healthy Nations, at which I had been invited to present my MSc. thesis “Midwives views of models of midwifery using focus groups”. I was fortunate to gain a distinction for this work and felt very enthusiastic about discussing it at such a major international event. Midwives throughout the world attended this conference to share their experiences, and it was fantastic hearing about their practice. I met many midwifery friends at the conference and it was great listening to their stories. I really enjoyed the sessions that I attended and learnt so much, particularly about the high maternal mortality rates in the developing world.
