Students have been receiving awards from the Trust since 1994, but the first awards specifically for student midwives were introduced in 2002. We are delighted to be partnering with MIDIRS in 2010 to offer the Iolanthe Student Awards. These are offered to pre-registration students seeking support for attendance at study days or to undertake elective visits. The Iolanthe Midwifery Trust has supported 55 students from across the UK.

Iolanthe Student Awards are awarded annually. Although the majority of student awards have been for elective placements, often overseas, a number of students have sought funding for other activities. Two students chose to undertake a course in therapeutic massage and one a course in infant massage, while this year one student requested funds to attend the International Confederation of Midwives’ Congress in Glasgow to present a paper on normal birth.
The Trust has supported 51 student placements. Elective placements have been very varied from Australia and New Zealand, to India, Nepal, Africa (Ethiopia, Kenya, Malawi, South Africa, Uganda, Zambia), Europe (Denmark, Netherlands, Sweden, Spain, UK) and North America (Canada, USA: New York, Rhode Island, Tennessee). Feedback indicates that the placements have been extremely useful in enhancing the student experience and developing an awareness of issues in international maternity care. In 2009 we assisted students to go to Uganda, Sweden, Tamil Nadu and the USA.
