The Iolanthe Midwives Awards are awarded annually. Previous awards have enabled midwives to fund courses which increase their academic status and/or help them develop specialist skills. Recent examples include Masters courses in midwifery, counselling and psychotherapy, reproductive and sexual health, medical law and ethics and assistance with academic fees for PhD study. Other examples include a Breastfeeding Management course as part of a course to qualify as an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant and courses in alternative therapies such as acupuncture and aromatherapy.
These awards also enable midwives to attend conferences to present their work e.g. in 2008 Iolanda Serci went to the 8th Congress of the International Society for the Study of Fatty Acids and Lipids (ISSFAL) in Kansas City, Missouri, USA. In 2005 Anne-Marie Rennie and Susan Gibb received funding to present their work at the 27th Triennial Congress of the International Confederation of Midwives, held in Brisbane Australia.
