The Trust has awarded in excess of 200 bursaries to midwives and others concerned with maternity care.

The 2004 awards were presented at the Royal Victoria Infirmary (RVI), Newcastle, following the Sandy Fyfe Memorial Lecture. The lecture was given by the RVI team that won the major ‘Delivering Best Practice Award’ for their project on ‘Evidence-based practice in the second stage of labour’. Janice Mackenzie, on behalf of the team, received her certificate from Mollie Fyfe, and Sally Marchant, chair of the Trust, presented the awards to the other winners who were able to attend.

EDUCATION BURSARIES were gained by: Laura Abbott, an independent midwife from Bedfordshire, for an MSc in Midwifery Science Helen Blunn, practice development midwife from Hinchinbrooke Hospital, for an MA in Clinical Leadership Esther Culpin, breastfeeding counsellor and midwife, Dundee, for an MSc in Midwifery Bernadette Earley and Aishah Bibi, midwives at the Birmingham Women’s Healthcare NHS Trust, shared an award to attend a course in the Rational Foundations of Holistic Physiology in Pregnancy, Labour and Birth Elaine Kirkham, midwifery sister at the Blackpool Victoria Hospital, for an Advanced Diploma in Counselling Rosalind Weston, senior clinical midwife at the Gilbert Bain Hospital, Shetland, for an MSc in Midwifery Hazel Woodcock, midwife at the Chesterfield & N Derbyshire Royal Hospital Trust, for the International Board of Lactation Consultants Examination Andrew Yelland, midwife at St Michael’s Hospital, Bristol, for a course in Counselling
Laura Abbott also received the Ann Stewart award.

STUDENT BURSARIES went to: Christine Kalimurti, at University of Wales for an elective placement to Hvidore, Denmark Sarah New at Bournemouth University for a placement to the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm Elizabeth Nocton at University of Leeds for a visit to The Farm, Tennessee Gabrielle Holmes at University of Leeds for a visit to The Farm, Tennessee - she decided to share the award with two other students, Lisa Bragg and Ann Lilley. Elizabeth Woolfenden and Louise Wilkinson at Bournemouth University also visited The Farm, Tennessee. Christine Kalimurti also received the Dame Rosalind Paget award, for an application demonstrating interest in the use of alternative therapies in midwifery

The 2003 awards were presented by the Trust's patron, the Lady Mancroft, in the distinguished setting of the Governors' Hall at St Thomas' Hospital, London. The photograph (left) shows the award winners pictured with the Lady Mancroft and Dr Sally Marchant, chair of the Iolanthe Midwifery Trust.
Student Bursaries were given to: Anna Byrom, at University of Central England, to visit the Christian Medical College and Hospital, Ludhiana, India Patricia Cumming, at King's College London, to visit the University of Witwatersrand, Johannesburg Joanne Watts, for a visit to the The Farm, Tennessee Natalie Mottershead, at Manchester University, who will visit the Birth Centre, Tooting, south London Barbara Wickert, at Bournemouth University, for a placement at St James' Hospital, Leeds Elizabeth Wright, at Napier University, Edinburgh, for a placement at the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital Lynn Manning, at Suffolk College, who will also be visiting The Farm in Tennessee Hayley Wright, for a placement in Tamil Nadu, India. Hayley has just finished her studies at University of Manchester |

Joy Kemp, to complete the second year of her MSc in Advancing Midwifery Practice at King's College London. Esther Culpin, for an MSc in Midwifery at the University of Dundee. Jane Forbes, for an MSc in Health & Social Care also at the University of Dundee. Susan Clarke, to embark on a Master's degree in Public Health at Nottingham University. Elaine Kirkham, for a course leading to the ABC Level 2 Certificate in Counselling Skills at Blackpool & The Fylde College. Julia Robson, to pursue the K257 course in Mental Health & Distress: Perspectives & Practice - at the Open University.

In 2002 winners were presented with their awards by Dr Sally Marchant, the Chairman of the Iolanthe Midwifery Trust, at an evening symposium organised by the Trust in memory of a former trustee, Sandy Fyfe. It was held at Llandough Hospital near Cardiff. The symposium's lead speaker was midwife Billie Hunter, a former Iolanthe Research Fellow.
The photograph shows Rosalind White receiving her award from Sally Marchant. Rosalind was the recipient of the British Hospital for Mothers and Babies (BHMB) award for advancing breastfeeding in the community. This was the last year that the BHMB award was presented. Rosalind also received the Ann Stewart award, a personal award which goes to the midwife whose application demonstrates the highest ideals in their commitment to advancing midwifery practice.
Education bursaries were given to Jill Rawcliffe, Jane West, Debbie Gower, Augustine Alexander and Elizabeth Crawford. General awards were given to Trudi Stevens and Heather Finlay. Student bursaries went to Angela Kerrigan, Sally Montes and Charlotte Taitt. |

The 2001 Iolanthe Midwifery Trust winners were presented with their awards by or patron Emma, Lady Mancroft. The Iolanthe trustees were delighted to collaborate on this occasion with the Midwives Information and Resource Service (MIDIRS) as hosts of the occasion, and the award presentation took place during the MIDIRS' 'Hot Topics' study day held at the Royal Surrey County Hospital in Guildford. Jill Sanghera, Research Fellow at the University of Bournemouth, gained the Iolanthe Midwifery Research Fellowship. Helen Cheyne, PhD student at the University of Glasgow - the Ann Stewart Award. The British Hospital for Mothers and Babies Award for advancing breastfeeding in the community was shared by the Albany Midwifery Practice (Peckham, South London) and the Abingdon Peer Support Project (John Radcliffe Hospital, Oxford). The awards were received by Susan Richards for the Abingdon Project and Rebecca Reed for the Albany midwives.
Education Bursaries were given to Kathryn Gutteridge, Cindy Horan, Elaine Lee, Amanda Mansfield and Veronica McArthur. An Iolanthe General Award went to Kylie Shaw Wallace.
